On May 25, 2022 Florida Governor DeSantis signed a bill into law that allowed Florida Lottery prize winners of $250,000 or more to remain anonymous for 90 days after the date they claimed their prize. After that bill was signed by The Governor it became FS 24.1051.
However large prize winners in Florida might be able to remain anonymous for much longer than 90 days provided they know how to make that happen.
The winner can hire a lawyer to draft documents creating an entity such as a trust with the lawyer acting as the trustee. The winners can have their lawyer claim the prize, and even after 90 days has elapsed, if someone inquired of The Florida Lottery as to the winners identity, all The Florida Lottery would reveal to anyone would be the name of the trust. Even if someone learned the name of the trust's trustee (and I don't know how they could do that) the trustee (the winners lawyer) would never reveal the name(s) of the beneficiaries of the trust.
The Florida Lottery publishes a report on their website called "The Jackpot Winners and Retailer Information Report". If a large prize winner claims their prize and invokes Florida Statute 24.1051, the report states that in the field on the report where the winners name normally appears. But the thing is this - after 90 days has elapsed from the date the report was first published, The Florida Lottery might not update the report with the winners name. They could opt to not update the report, rather they could simply wait to see if anyone inquires about the winners name.
From looking at the latest Jackpot Winners Report for Florida Lotto, to date, there have been two multi-million dollar prizes claimed where FS 24.1051 was invoked by the winners. Neither of those prizes were claimed more than 90 days ago. Both were claimed in August of 2023. It'll be interesting to see how The Florida Lottery updates the report in November. That's IF they even bother to update it which they might choose not to. If the winners hired lawyers to set up a trust, and had their lawyers claim the prizes as the trustee, then my guess is that those jackpot winners will remain anonymous for far longer than 90 days. G5
