Mississippi lawmakers could debate creation of a lottery
Mississippi residents for years have been crossing into Louisiana, Arkansas and Tennessee to buy lottery tickets.
In 2018, lawmakers could debate whether Mississippi will join the large majority of states that offer games of chance.
Supporters say money being spent on lottery tickets elsewhere could, instead, be spent in Mississippi, creating revenue to help pay for highways, schools or other state government services.
If that money is going to go to educate children and it's going to

GOP proposal would open door to lottery, casinos in Alabama
A constitutional amendment that would legalize gambling in Alabama authorizes a lottery, casino gambling and expanded Indian gaming.
Senate President Pro Tem Del Marsh, a Republican from Birmingham, Ala., gave other state senators an initial draft of the legislation Thursday. It calls for a Sept. 15 election so voters can decide the amendment's fate in wake of a projected $250 million shortfall in state's revenues this fiscal year, which ends Sept. 30.

Some Baptists want Texas Lottery Commission shut down
My Wife is LDS so I am able to see things from a unique perspective, especially since I am not LDS. While it is recommended that they do, members of the church are not forced into giving a tithe. It just means that they do not get to keep specific privledges. However not giving a tithe does not prevent members from attending religious services, recreational church sponsored events (Chili Cookoffs, Pot Luck Dinners, etc.), or from recieving financial or food assistance. During the time that we've

Businesses near Nevada border popular for lottery players
For those heading toward Nevada on this lonely stretch of U.S. Highway 93, Rosie's at the Boulder Inn Cafe is the last chance to gamble in Arizona.
For those in Las Vegas, meanwhile, this 77-year-old former truck stop is the closest place to play the Arizona Lottery.
When the Powerball jackpot spikes, people flood to Rosie's over Hoover Dam, 35 miles to the north, said general manager Brad Larsen, whose mother is the cafe's namesake.
It doesn't even get busy until $100 million, he said

Powerball renews interest in Mississippi state lottery
By all accounts, Mississippians by droves participated in the $1.6 billion Powerball lottery that was awarded this past week, but the state of Mississippi did not participate.
Mississippi is one of six states that does not conduct a lottery. The others are Alabama, Nevada, Utah, Hawaii and Alaska.
But, according to many people, the fact the state does not have a lottery does not mean Mississippians were not vying for the record jackpot.
Supporters of the lottery say the state of Mississ

Alabama lottery proposal set for Senate debate Tuesday
If Alabama approves a state-sponsored lottery, it will be heading down a well-worn path one trod by 44 states so far.
But one element of the lottery proposal by Sen. Del Marsh, R-Anniston, remains unusual: the Legislature would be able to spend the cash at its own discretion, rather than marking the money for a specific purpose, such as college scholarships.
It is uncommon for states not to earmark the money, Thomas Garrett, a University of Mississippi economist who studies state lotterie

Approval for online poker in D.C. seen as long shot
Congress sent a message Wednesday to D.C. officials who this week approved plans for the city lottery to offer online poker: Not so fast.
The D.C. Council on Tuesday, with little discussion and no public notice, voted 11-2 in favor of a budget amendment that would legalize online poker and fantasy sports gambling through the D.C. Lottery as a means of helping plug a $200 million budget gap.
But on Wednesday, Rep. Jason Chaffetz of Utah, ranking Republican on the House subcommittee that ove

Here's how much the average person spends on the lottery in every state
Millions of Americans willingly spend their hard-earned money for a chance at an early retirement, lifelong financial security, and the extravagant lifestyle that a single lucky lottery ticket could provide.
Americans spent a staggering $71.8 billion on lottery tickets in 2017 or about $285 per adult. Of course, lottery ticket spending is not the same across all states, and in some parts of the country, Americans appear much more willing to spend in the hopes of hitting the jackpot.
