Superstitious ticket-selecting method works out

By Kate Northrop

BLUFFTON, S.C. — A South Carolina man's personal method of picking out lottery tickets worked out in his favor when he won a $300,000 top prize in a scratch-off game.

One lucky South Carolina resident's unique way of playing the lottery ended up winning him a $300,000 top prize from a scratch-off ticket.

If it works, it works. An anonymous Bluffton resident is now debt-free thanks to the $10 "Stacks of Cash" scratch-off ticket he picked out at the Enmark Station on Bluffton Parkway in Bluffton. But how did he decide to buy this particular game?

"I get whatever ticket is sticking out the furthest," he told the South Carolina Lottery.

He had a good feeling about this "Stacks of Cash" ticket — the one that happened to be sticking out the most in the ticket cabinets — and immediately froze mid-scratch when he saw the $300,000 prize amount.

"I couldn't believe it," he recalled. "I went home and took the rest of the day off."

With the winnings, he can completely wipe away any lingering debts. The Enmark Station also celebrated a win and received a $3,000 commission from the Lottery for selling the ticket.

Now that the lucky player has claimed his prize, there are three more top prizes of $300,000 out of the six originally available at the game's launch in December 2023. There are also 14 out of 71 second-tier prizes of $10,000 and 349 out of 1,489 third-tier prizes of $1,000 remaining.

The odds of winning any prize in the $10 "Stacks of Cash" game are 1 in 3.38, while the odds of winning the top prize are 1 in 900,000.

LOL. That ticket was yelling "pick me, pick me!"

Neat story.

"I get whatever ticket is sticking out the furthest," he told the South Carolina Lottery.

I wonder how much money and how many years the winner has been buying  "whatever ticket is sticking out the furthest,"

It's so easy to confuse luck with "how we do things"

It's a feel good story though.

When I go to the store to buy my ticket, if there is an older customer I left them go before me out of respect.

Should I win the jackpot in such a scenario, I will make sure to share that strategy 🤣🤣🤣

That's a cool story. Regardless of if his method works or not, it's still a cool story.

I'm glad he was able to get rid of his debts, that would be very nice.

I wish him all the best.

My method for buying scratchers is I don't just buy one or two I buy 10 in one shot. I always get a couple of winners that way, even though I don't always get all my money back.

The only way to know for sure if a method is that effective is to track it in a spreadsheet. I do that with some methods I've been using to pick numbers on draw games and find some do work a little better than others.

That method of buying the one that sticks farthest out is clever but here in some stores, that isn't easy to do because the scratcher dispensers are faced away from the customer so we can see the tickets but not what is sticking out. Some stores have the tickets on a display and the dispensers are actually under the counter.

Still a great story and I wish the winner well.

I think at the end of the day we all do something that we think will land us the big one.

I have read here about those that go to five different gas stations and buy a ticket in each.

As humans we are wired to give meaning to everything just to make sense of it all.

Am glad they won regardless of the how.

I wish you luck too with your strategy.

I wish myself luck as well - hope I meet more older customers in the store 🤣

I pick my ticket by closing my eyes 😝

Yeah, it's not either of us.  I think if I did win I'd have to say something because it would make for a really good news story. 😄

Bluffton, huh?   I've been there. It's a beautiful little town.  The other thing about it is it's right next door to Hilton Head SC.  Megabucks there.  But I'd live in Bluffton long before I'd ever buy in Hilton Head.  Don't get me wrong, Hilton Head Island is absolutely gorgeous.  But it doesn't come close to having the charm Bluffton has.  G5

FULLYBLESS

I use to pick at least 5 tickets of the same stratch off but what works better for me, if I pick 1 of each stratch off now...GOOD LUCK TO ALL OF US AND CONGRATULATIONS TO THE BLUFFTON SC WINNER...
